Types of Platform Businesses

Platform businesses can be classified based on how many different types of users transact on them. The simplest form is the one-sided platform. All users have similar expectations and preferences. For example, the value in a telephone is not in the telephone itself but in the interesting things that I say to the person I speak to or hear from. The value is in the connection with someone else. In most communication systems like the telephone, but also the fax machine, and later email, every user wants largely the same thing—effective, cheap, fast, quality communication.

Platforms become more interesting when they connect different types of users.
